Raid Group: Know the Fight

April 28, 2010 at 7:30 pm (Guild Relationships, Raiding)

This is the first part of a short series I’m planning to lay out my thoughts on the role of raiders and raid leaders alike.  Your thoughts and opinions are welcome – I’d like a serious discussion with input from all parties involved.  While these might be often discussed topics, I am finding that the parameters of the discussion need to change, as we are seeing more people with different skill sets raiding.  And, since it’s unlikely I’ll ever have the time/money/desire to be one of the elite, realm first raiders, I think it is incumbent of me (and others) to find ways to integrate and deal with the new raiders, as well as refine our own skills and knowledge base.

As those of us of a certain age remember, Schoolhouse Rock told us “It’s great to learn, ‘cause knowledge is power.”  In Warcraft, at no time is knowledge more powerful than in a raid.  Lack of it spells certain doom, for a given player and the entire party.  The question is, what is reasonable for the individual raid members to know, and what should the raid/role leaders know.  (Note: The position of role leader to me is the tank/healing/dps leader that one may find in well organized 25-man raids.)

Phat Loot/Achievement Sunday

April 26, 2010 at 4:44 pm (5-Mans, Achievements, Raiding)

Oh, what a weekend.  I try to enter with some concrete goals, and so called “stretch goals” to dictate how much time I should be spending on my various alts.  Otherwise, I’m lost in the wilderness, simply trying to pick up anything and everything.  I suppose it’s just the scheduler in me; I feel the need to plan everything out.  Considering how things started off Friday night, I’m shocked and awed that I managed to meet any of my goals. I’m Looking for my Dungeon!

April 24, 2010 at 4:56 am (5-Mans)

A great post over at The Hunter’s Mark, on how so many of the new players using the LFD tool have no idea how to get into a dungeon manually.  Now, this is something I’ve experienced, with some folks being unable to navigate back to the instance after a wipe.  An article for many of us, particularly those who have leveled after BC and WotLK came out, and skipped the early instances.

Rusty’s Bar

Well, the guild finally decided to act, and devote an entire tab to Rusty’s personal need.  I’m referring to it simply as “the fridge.”

Just when you think it can’t get worse, it does.  My computer issues (failed hard drive) were immediately followed up by the need for a huge effort at work that spilled over into my personal time.  It was large enough to cut down my playtime and remove any writing time.  However, with the new changes announced in Cataclysm, I’m primed and ready to whine, bitch, and moan, as well as applaud and cheer.

But first, what have I been doing in my limited time?  Well, I moved a both Rustbeard and my original DK over to the Gorgonnash (PvP) server to join with my former guild <Prôphecy>.  Of course, this has required gearing my plate wearer up for tanking purposes, only to discover the reluctance of my guild to take a DK tank.  I’m still working on changing those perceptions.  I’ll have to build a true DPS set as well, but the future changes have me wondering if the good DK players will be held back in order to help those who can’t figure out a play style and associated talent choices – see my comments on Who Needs Shields.  In the meantime, I’m running Rusty on ICC-10 content – so hopefully look to see some achievements here soon.

Other than that, I’ve been recently working on my holy priest, moving him to Outlands with the intention of being a healer for Cataclysm – for when the guild runs into those “oh crap, we have no healers again, but an overabundance of dps” days.

** Note: Since writing this post, my Death Knight completed tanking his first raid.  ToC-10 was completed, not without difficulty (pugging healers who don’t enter vent makes things difficult).  But, might I give out a little: Woot!
