Baleroc – Meet the Keymaster!

August 25, 2011 at 1:48 am (Raiding)

<Sword of Azeroth> is climbing the charts again.  The dance was a marathon one, but after two <5% wipes, we finally agreed it was time to finish him and move on.

Where We Are…

August 14, 2011 at 4:50 pm (Raiding)

Upon getting back from my brief hiatus, I noticed we’re somewhat farther along then when I left.  We’re not into heroics yet, but the pic below describes how we roll.  Special thanks to Lilmiss from <Swords of Azeroth> for a great picture!

It Burns When I PvE

July 28, 2011 at 4:00 pm (Guild Relationships, Raiding)

The last few weeks I’ve been beating my head (along with the rest of my guild) on Beth repeatedly.  It sounds like the guild is suffering from massive failure; however, reality differs significantly from the first impression.  We’ve suffered from disconnects, and on a 25-man fight like this one, the sudden loss of one of your spiderling killers is an almost auto-wipe.  The lag within Vent caused the guild to switch to Mumble – here’s a tip, don’t switch systems on a raid night.  We’ve also tried a number of strategies, and moved from 3 tanks to 2.  If suffering is sunshine on the soul, enough already – we’re suffering from 3rd degree burns.  Despite the problems, we’re still filling our raids, there has not been a mass of /gquits in frustration, and the group has been willing to continue on this boss rather than moving over to a different target.  How has this group held it together, when others that I have been a part of have fractured under the strain?  Well, several ways:

No public blame game.  There’s no open discussion, either in chat or on Mumble, that “player X fracked up.”  Issues with individual performance are handled by /whisper in chat.  And, by referring issues directly to the raid leader in a PM, you avoid the potential drama bomb that explodes later.

Individual responsibility.  Sometimes bad things happen.  And occasionally, it’s even your fault.  Own up.  Ask for help if you need it.  A raid leader will appreciate your honesty, and may save the group countless wipes.

Humor in the group.  While returning to the instance the lighthearted comments fly faster than our ghostly griffins.  Comments about our “leet sporebats” help reduce the stress, and remind everyone that we are, in fact, here to have fun.

Willingness to adapt strategies to fit the group.  Diverse groups mean diverse abilities.  Moving players around may solve some problems, but occasionally the strategy just won’t work with the group available.  Instead of trying to pound square pegs into round holes, look to find a square hole instead.

10 Signs You’re Not Going to Drop the Boss Today

July 21, 2011 at 4:11 pm (5-Mans, Raiding)

  • There’s no hunter.
  • While demonstrating the survival technique during the fight, the priest pulls the boss.
  • The druid’s name is “Failchicken.”
  • The DK asks for the shield if it drops. Bonus points if he wants the BoP item for an alt.
  • There is any use of “Sham-WOW” when casting Heroism/Bloodlust.
  • The warrior tank cries that he can’t get aggro on groups.
  • When asked for “Lock candy” the response is “Red Hots or Wintergreen?”
  • The rogue tries to use a gun for Fan of Knives.
  • Your mage dies and flies back to the wrong instance, wondering why he can’t get in.
  • The ret pally is wearing spirit armor, and announces her intention to tank.

And before you ask, yes… these have happend to me.

Fix the Hotfix

July 12, 2011 at 7:51 pm (QQ, Raiding)

I’m not sure what Blizzard did between 1 and 7am this morning, all I know is it managed to screw up our possibility of  downing Beth, with a massive number of disconnects from about 9:30pm CDT and on.  We were hitting Phase 2 with  regularity, and had moved some more DPS up to death with her spiderness.

And, apparently, it stuck with me and hung around.  I had continued problems with disconnects even in BH – I’m not sure if our guild’s switch to Mumble had anything to do with it, but I’ve not had a problem with graphic settings since I’ve hhad this computer.  So, whatever you did Bliz, fix it.

But hey, I did pick up a nice [Ramseur of Hatred]!

Old Content is Still Useful

June 28, 2011 at 5:33 am (Patch Issues, Raiding)

The realms are down.  Across the server world, tents are being raised, questgivers are being ushered into position, and the house lights are preparing to dim on a whole new host of boss encounters.  And much like a State Farm commercial, thousands of guilds will enter new instances tonight, and at least three will have a Leroy Jenkins moment.  With the new tier of content, there is going to be a considerable push to focus exclusively on the Firelands raids.  That being said, there are some compelling reasons to continue to focus some time and effort on both regular and heroic Tier 11 content.
